Eden Prairie Steel Roof Installation

Is a steel roof that much better than asphalt? In short, yes. There are many benefits to a steel roof that property owners can not get with traditional shingles. The benefits of a metal roof installation in Eden Prairie include durability, energy efficiency, environmentally friendly, weather resistance, aesthetically pleasing, and resilient.

An asphalt roof has a continual upkeep process. Shingles wear down from weather or old age, and must be replaced, we call it the asphalt roof recycle process as asphalt roofs must be replaced every 17-20 years regardless of warranty. More often if hit by a hail storm and hail damage occurred. Asphalt shingles are heavy,  dark, absorbing and holding heat in the summertime and boosting cooling bills. These shingled roofs also are beginning to look more outdated than the sleek metal roof designs of today.

Many of the problems Minnesota residents face regarding asphalt roofs can be solved for good with just one switch to a long lasting metal roof. Metal roofs are worth it for peace of mind and long-term sustainability.

Standing seam metal roofs are a specific type of metal roof. A standing seam metal roof is the type of metal roof that has long vertical panels connected to the roof deck by fasteners. This is the type of roof that most people think of when they think of a metal roof.

Standing seam roofs have a few major benefits. First, they give homes a modern look, and customers can customize the design of the standing seam metal roof to their liking. Another is that snow will easily slide off the roof. Another benefit is in the character of the fastener systems. Our fastener systems are available in two types: exposed and hidden.

Exposed fastener systems have visible screws securing the standing seam roof. Over the years, these screws will expand and contract with dramatic temperature changes. Because of the expansion caused by heat and cold, the entry point of the screw could eventually allow water to penetrate the roof deck. For this reason, exposed fastener systems work great for unheated structures like barns, outbuildings and storage sheds. We do not recommend these for heated structures.

Hidden fastener systems also use screws to attach the panel to the roof deck. However, these screws are covered which protects them from the elements. Even though the screws in a hidden fastener system will expand and contract with fluctuating temperatures, the screw holes are completely covered so water and moisture cannot penetrate through to the roof deck structure. Hidden fastener systems work extremely well for heated and air conditioned homes, churches, commercial buildings, and outbuildings because they provide an added layer of protection when compared to exposed fastener systems. Hidden fastener systems also provide a seamless look because all of the screws are covered.

Metal Roof FAQs

Is a metal roof noisy?

This is probably the #1 question we as metal roof installers get.  Perhaps you remember standing under a barn, shed or outbuiliding during a rainstorm. In these structures, the steel roof panels are secured directly to the rafters.  There is no sound barrier so it sounded loud when it rained. On a home, townhome or heated commercial facility, the steel panels are fastened to an underlayment, then decking, with insulation under that and a sheet rock ceiling which absorbs and muffles sound.

In addition, and this too helps muffle sound, some metal roofs can be installed over an asphalt roof.  Considering the layer of shingles, roof deck, attic air space, rafters, the insulation, and sheetrock ceiling, individuals who have metal roof say what they hear when it rains is the rain on their skylights and soft metals (gutters), not their metal roof.

Can I walk on my metal roof?

Yes, but like with any roof care should always be taken.

How much does a metal roof cost compared to asphalt roofs?

Initially a metal roof may cost more depending on the type of asphalt shingle you compare it to.  A steel roof will never need to be replaced in your lifetime, lasting 40-80 years (depending on metal type) when compared to asphalt roofs which last about 17-20 years in our climate. If you have hail, wind or storm damage asphalt shingles are more likely to damage when compared to a metal roof. Therefore over a life-time,  a metal roof is less expensive.
