Embossed Interlocking Steel

Interlocking metal roofing panel systems by Edco are engineered with long-lasting colors, and are available in embossed smooth or with an embossed textured finish. Gable

The gable roof is the most common type of roof found in the United States, and is easily recognized by its triangular shape. A gable roof also is known as a pitched, or peak roof. Gable roofs are on outbuildings and detached garages on many rural properties, and is ideal for shedding water and snow, as it has a high pitch.

Any type of metal roof will work on a gable roof, although a standing seam roof sheds winter snows. Certainly shed snows better than an asphalt or wood shake roof would. Gable roofs are susceptible to wind damage, so a metal roof with a wind rating of 120-160mph provides this style of roof with extra protection. This is because of the fastening systems used on metal roofs.

Hip

A hip roof is less common on barns and outbuildings, because it has pitches running in all four directions that lead to a ridge on the longer side of the building. The slant of a hip roof sheds snow and rain more easily than other roof types. A hip roof is more weather resilient than a gable roof because it offers more protection from strong winds. The inward slope on all four sides is what makes hip roofs so durable and an excellent choice for high snow and wind areas.

All three types of metal roofs that we install at AM Burney Exteriors are perfect to use on a hip roof, although installation is often more complex due to the added angles.This is not a steel roof installation for beginners metal roof installers. Only seasoned professionals should tackle this roof due to the nature of the complexity. We have installed metal roofs on hip roofs, great look, excellent performance.

Shed

A shed roof is the simplest design, as it merely slopes one direction. From a taller wall on one side of the building, to a shorter wall on the other side. Shed roofs are more typical on smaller outbuildings that don’t require heavy load-bearing. Shed roofs generally have a low pitch, so they are not ideal for areas with heavy snowfall, such as Minnesota and Wisconsin. However, the right metal roof, such as standing seam panels, with the right pitch will help shed the snow, preventing a collapse.

Gambrel

A gambrel roof is also called a Dutch Colonial roof, and is categorized as multi-pitched roofs, where multiple peaks intersect at different angles. These roofs are often chosen for their waterproof properties and ability to shed rain and snow.

Snow puddling on flatter sides of the gambrel roof can cause water damages and could possibly collapse. A metal roof that sheds snow easily is a good option to mediate this issue. Gambrel roofs are ideal for barns because they provide a greater storage area at the top of the barn and help regulate the temperature during the hot and cold months.

A standing seam metal roof sheds snow quickly and provides the extra strength of the metal. An Embossed interlocking steel roof not only sheds snow quickly, it also has a 160 MPH wind rating. A stone-coated steel roof also offers excellent weather protection and still provides the traditional barn roof appearance. All good choices. All with a Class 4 hail rating. Is a metal roof noisy?

This is probably the #1 question we as metal roof installers get. Perhaps you remember standing under a barn, shed or outbuiliding during a rainstorm. In these structures, the steel roof panels are secured directly to the rafters. There is no sound barrier so it sounded loud when it rained. On a home, townhome or heated commercial facility, the steel panels are fastened to an underlayment, then decking, with insulation under that and a sheet rock ceiling which absorbs and muffles sound.

In addition, and this too helps muffle sound, some metal roofs can be installed over an asphalt roof. Considering the layer of shingles, roof deck, attic air space, rafters, the insulation, and sheetrock ceiling, individuals who have metal roof say what they hear when it rains is the rain on their skylights and soft metals (gutters), not their metal roof.

Yes, but like with any roof care should always be taken.

How much does a metal roof cost compared to asphalt roofs?

Initially a metal roof may cost more depending on the type of asphalt shingle you compare it to.
